86th Annual Meeting National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

By Jack Price, OCC

The 86th annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics was held April 9 – 12 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  More than 9000 mathematics teachers from K through College attended the 1000 sessions and perused an extensive exhibit hall of more than 200 vendors.  I presented a paper titled Teaching and Learning Mathematics: Fifty Years Ducking the Pendulum.  The presentation began with the early attempts at “new math” in the 1950’s and continued through to the “math wars” of the present day.

As past-president and former first lady of NCTM, Barbara and I had the opportunity to renew networking with colleagues from throughout the United States, and 15 other countries.  Although the weather was cold and snowy, the friendships were warm and the convention was worth the heavy clothing.
