Critical Race Studies in Education Conference

For professional development, I attended the Critical Race Studies in Education Conference at the University of Chicago, May 2008. Participants came from around the country (including significant envoys from California and Arizona) to offer their expertise on Critical Race Theory (CRT) and its analytical value.  As a sociologist and educator in African American studies, I was drawn to this conference because the subtext (Toward a Critical Race Praxis in Education and Social Life), placed emphasis on both scholarship and community activism which I believe are equally critical in challenging racial inequalities of past and present.  Some of the more memorable sessions I attended include: (1) Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) to Engender Justice and Critiquing Systems of Oppression for Black and Latino Youth, (2) Ain’t I a Scholar: The Narratives and Experiences of African American Faculty in Predominantly White Universities, and (3) The Social Justice Education Project: Racism, Praxis, and Transformation.
