Part-time faculty members Ellis Waller and Lorie Eber received funding from CCA to attend a national conference sponsored by MetLife Foundation/Civic Ventures Community College Encore Career Project. The conference was held, in Philadelphia, April 2-3. Coastline Community College was one of ten community colleges that received a grant out of 118 applicants. Dr. Debra Secord was instrumental in authoring the application.
Coastline received funds to assist students in finding encore careers in the field of aging and other social service industries. Part-time Professor, Ellis Waller conducted a workshop in February with 51 attendees. Additional workshops are scheduled at Coastline Community College at the Costa Mesa Campus, from April 28 through May 1. The goals of the workshop were to encourage baby boomers to volunteer or find employment in the social service field, expose participants to gerontological concepts necessary to work in the field of aging and provide an opportunity to share resources and methods for obtaining volunteer and paid positions.
The purpose of the Philadelphia Conference was to invitee grantees to share strategies for success, challenges, human-interest stories and ways to market to the boomer population. Additionally, marketing representatives from Washington D.C. discussed the importance of marketing to boomers with concepts that appeal to this generation. Without CCA’s support, faculty would not have been able to attend, since only limited travel funds were provided in the grant.
